Over 100 abandoned boats in Marina del Rey, if you’re wondering how the economy is doing

Sean McCarthy, who owns Catalina Crew, a marine services and lifestyle business based in Marina del Rey, said some of the boats may have become too expensive to insure or maintain or simply too old and people left them behind — in some cases, still owing marinas thousands of dollars in unpaid fees.

“As slip rates rise, there’s no intrinsic monetary value to the boat, so it’s not worth it to pay $600, $700, $800, up to $2,000 a month for a slip for a boat,” he said.
