Romania has warned about the risk of mass bankruptcy after the closure of the LUKOIL
Refinery, about 460 companies in Romania may go bankrupt if the country’s authorities do not reopen the Petrotel refinery, which belongs to the Russian LUKOIL. This was stated by the head of the national confederation of trade unions Cartel Alfa Bogdan Hossu.
According to Mr. Hossu, the mass closure of companies can lead to the dismissal of 8,000 people and ultimately threatens a “social problem” for Romania.
The head of Cartel Alfa reminded that the authorities in Germany and Bulgaria faced a similar situation regarding the LUKOIL refinery. They managed to promptly appoint a special manager who oversees that the money generated from the operation of the plants is not sent to Russia.
“We, despite our experience in similar situations, have not been able to appoint a special manager over the past 14 months,” Bogdan Hossu said in an interview with DCBusiness.
The LUKOIL refinery is located in the city of Ploiești in the central part of Romania and processes 21% of the country’s oil. The enterprise employs more than 500 people. It closed for repairs in October 2025. Then the plant came under US sanctions and effectively ceased operations. In early September, the court admitted the oil refinery to bankruptcy proceedings. The enterprise’s debts amount to €400 million. In addition to the oil refinery in Ploiești, LUKOIL owns another 300 gas stations in Romania.
