The AI buildout is the biggest infrastructure push as a share of GDP in nearly 200 years.

A Columbia/Brookings paper published Sept. 23 estimates that $8.2 trillion of AI-related infrastructure investment could be required globally over eight years. At its assumed pace, that’s roughly 2.8% of global GDP per year. The paper compares that scale with historic U.S. infrastructure waves: railroads averaged about 2.4% of GDP, interstate highways about 1.6%, electrification about 1.1%, and telecom/fiber about 0.8% during their respective buildouts.
