Nvidia and AMD plunge, wiping out Wall Street’s post-election rally

At 10:10 a.m. Eastern today, the Nasdaq was down 3.6%, the S&P 500 had fallen 2%, and the Dow had lost 502 points. Nvidia dropped 6.3%, AMD plunged 13.1% and CoreWeave sank 10%. The big problem is the AI spending boom. Investors are questioning whether hundreds of billions poured into chips and data centers will ever produce the profits companies are promising. Tuesday’s Democratic election sweep added another headache. New restrictions and local opposition could delay data-center construction, with UBS warning that roughly 30% of planned U.S. data-center capacity additions in 2028 could be at risk. Qualcomm then added fuel to the selloff, dropping about 9% after its smartphone chip sales forecast missed expectations. The same pressure is hitting data-center operators, chip suppliers and companies supplying power to these facilities. South Korea’s Kospi also plunged 5.3%. Wall Street’s AI trade is getting hit from two directions: investors are questioning the money being spent, and now they are questioning whether all those data centers will even get built. One detail: this is not a broad market crash yet. AP reported that a slight majority of S&P 500 stocks were actually higher during the selloff.
