Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa signed a defense cooperation agreement, while Saudi Arabia committed another $403 million in loans for Syria. The money will go toward rebuilding power plants, hospitals, homes, water systems and civil defense centers. One project alone will put $105 million into 25 civil defense centers, while another $90 million will help restore the Aleppo power plant. This comes less than a month after the two leaders met in Riyadh on October 6 to discuss reconstruction. Syria is also considering joining the Saudi-Turkey-Pakistan mutual defense alliance, although today’s agreement does not make it a member. After years of war and the fall of Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, Syria is now rebuilding ties with a powerful regional backer.
