Iran is putting a price on reopening one of the world’s most important oil routes. Tehran says it could restore shipping through the Strait of Hormuz within 2 days if the United States lifts its blockade of Iranian ports, eases sanctions on Iranian oil sales and accepts a ceasefire covering Lebanon. Qatar is mediating, but Washington has not accepted the terms. The pressure has been building since the US-Iran war disrupted shipping through the strait in February. Tanker attacks and threats to commercial vessels have kept energy markets on edge. Brent crude fell nearly 4% today on hopes of a deal, but the route is not secure and the supply risk has not disappeared.
