Trump says he is allowed to issue a self-pardon and signals openness to pardoning staff

In a Newsmax interview Thursday, Trump said he is allowed to grant himself a pardon. He said he does not think about doing it because he “did nothing wrong” and could have done it when he left office the first time but did not. He also said he does not want people who work for him to “go through years of nonsense, hire lawyers and everything else, all for nothing.” A White House spokesperson later pointed back to those comments when asked about any plans. No president has previously issued a self-pardon and then faced prosecution. Trump previously told Time magazine he would consider pardons for administration members.
