Obama-era FBI found ‘some evidence’ of Ilhan Omar marriage fraud: NY Times

Federal investigators uncovered “some evidence” suggesting Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) may have committed marriage fraud during former President Barack Obama’s presidency, but declined to bring charges after determining the statute of limitations had expired, according to a new report.

The FBI and Department of Homeland Security investigated allegations in 2016 surrounding the congresswoman’s 2009 marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, a man whom critics have long alleged was her brother, The New York Times reported on Thursday, citing current and former officials.

Investigators reportedly identified evidence raising questions about the marriage, but prosecutors concluded that the five-year statute of limitations prevented them from pursuing a felony marriage fraud case.

Omar, who legally divorced Elmi in December 2017, has repeatedly denied that he is her brother and rejected allegations that their marriage was arranged to secure immigration benefits. She has not been charged with any crime.
