Crowds clash with Ukraine’s National Guard after allegations of beatings at an Azov-run detention site near Kyiv

Around 40 mobilized men were reportedly being held inside a private house in Petropavlivska Borshchahivka, near Kyiv. On November 2, crowds gathered outside, demanding access to the men. The National Guard’s 1st Azov Corps later admitted the building belonged to one of its units and was being used to hold newly mobilized soldiers and men who had gone AWOL. Four men were sent to hospital with injuries. A doctor who entered the building alleged that one had a broken spine. Protesters smashed windows, broke through a wall and attacked police vehicles while security forces fired shots into the air. Kyrylo Budanov arrived at the scene, where a 14-year-old boy was filmed being escorted out wrapped in a blanket. The boy said he had come with friends, and officials have not confirmed he was detained inside. On November 3, Ukraine’s State Bureau of Investigation opened criminal proceedings over possible abuse of authority by military officials. The National Guard says it will no longer use the building. Budanov says investigators will identify those behind the clashes, while the question of who authorized the detention site and what happened to the men inside remains unanswered.
