America is getting hammered by floods from Arizona to Florida, and the worst may still be ahead

Arizona and Colorado have already been hit by destructive flooding, Florida is now dealing with historic rainfall and rising rivers, and the Pacific Northwest is facing another round of heavy rain from an approaching atmospheric river. Florida’s Space Coast recorded its highest non-tropical water level since 1994 on October 29, with king tides and persistent onshore winds pushing water inland. NOAA is forecasting El Niño conditions through the winter, adding another concern for parts of the country already dealing with extreme rainfall. Meanwhile, FEMA lost more than 4,300 employees during fiscal 2025, and its available surge workforce for the 2026 hurricane season was projected to fall from roughly 600 to 240. Americans are facing flooded homes, damaged roads, evacuation costs and rising prices for basic supplies, while the people and resources needed to respond to disasters are under pressure.
