Between January 1, 2016, and December 27 there were 4307 shooting victims. On the other hand, 2989 people were shot in the period between January 1, 2015, and December 31, 2015.

The victims in shootings over Christmas weekend ranged from ages 17 to 53. It is impossible to ignore the fact that an increase in violence has occurred despite strict gun laws in Chicago.

In the interview on ABC’s The Week, Donald Trump explained: “You look at Chicago, it’s got the toughest gun laws in the United States. You look at other places where they have gun laws that are very tough, they do — generally speaking — worse than anybody else.”

However, Mayor Rahm Emanuel released a report wherein he blamed the surge of gun violence onto gun sales in the neighboring states. The report said: “Early 60% of recovered guns used to commit crimes in Chicago from 2009 through 2013 were first sold in states with more lax gun laws. Neighboring Indiana was the biggest source, with 19% of all recovered guns having been sold there first. But they came from far and wide, with Mississippi second at 6.7%.”
Another potential reason for these unfortunate events could be the fact that people arrested for possession of illegal guns don’t stay locked up for long, according to the police Superintendent Garry McCarthy.

During his presidential campaign, Donald Trump has frequently mentioned Chicago as the perfect example that strict gun control measures aren’t effective solution for urban shootings.
