A Brief History of Our Two Political Parties: Republicans Defended Women and Freed the Slaves While Democrats Degraded Women and Perpetuate Racism to this Day

Republicans are the racist and sexist party, right? They keep women down and want take us back to the Jim Crow era, don’t they?

While these are commonly held beliefs by our nation’s professors, political pundits, journalists, celebrities, and essentially all liberals and many independents, if you take a look at the history of our two major parties you’ll quickly realize that the war on women is being waged by Democrats and the party that defended slavery and keeps blacks enslaved today is, yep, you guessed it, the Democrats.

Full disclosure here. I don’t think Republicans are saints or even a respectable party at this point in time. I yearn for a viable third option, but we are not there yet. Politicians are an untrustworthy and self-interested class. Republicans used to stand for and defend fiscal responsibility, limited government, and economic freedom. Today, they are just the party of a little bit smaller big government than their Democratic opposition. I am a libertarian conservative and am skeptical of politicians and the media due to my extensive experience covering them as a freelance journalist for the last few years and seeing how the sausage is made. I voted for Gary Johnson in 2008 because a was an ideological collegian who had just finished reading Atlas Shrugged. I chose Mitt Romney in 2012 to stop the socialist regime of Barack Obama. And in 2016, I voted for Donald J. Trump. I’m not ashamed of that. I am quite proud of it. So there you have it.

The truth about the Republican Party is an awkward one for Democrats to face. The war on women and outright racism have been the cornerstones of the Democratic Party since their founding. While Democrats signal their virtue and claim to be defenders of minorities and women, their past shows that they are anything but.

The inspiration and sourcing of this article comes from Carol Swain’s videos on Prager University, both of which are linked later.

The Republican Party was formed in 1854 and arose in staunch opposition against polygamy, which treated women essentially as property and slavery, which treated blacks as literal property. Both polygamy and slavery were spreading into the western territories and Republicans were alarmed that these two destructive and dehumanizing practices could become the law of the land in these soon-to-be states. Democrats were so opposed to the anti-slavery Republicans that Democrat-controlled South Carolina voted to secede from the union after the first Republican president, Abraham Lincoln, was elected.

After the bloody Civil War, Republicans passed three amendments to finally bring blacks into American society and recognize them as equal citizens. The 13th Amendment freed the slaves. The 14th Amendment granted them citizenship. And the 15th Amendment gave them the right to vote. Democrats in Congress offered zero votes for the 14th and 15th amendments. Therefore, blacks flocked to the Republican Party and became involved in politics for the first time ever. In 1870, the first black senator and congressman were sworn in and both were Republican. Every black representative in the House until 1935 was a Republican and every black senator until 1979 was too. In addition, the first female member of Congress, the first Hispanic governor and senator, and the first Asian senator were all Republican.

Republicans were valiant defenders of women’s rights while facing strong opposition from Democrats for decades. In 1862, the Morrill Anti-Bigamy Act was passed by the Republican controlled congress to put an end to polygamy. In 1920, the 19th Amendment, giving women the right to vote, was ratified despite incessant Democrat opposition. President Woodrow Wilson, a Democrat, ended up signing on even though he also was against women voting. 59 percent of House Democrats voted in favor of women’s suffrage while only 41 percent of Senate Democrats did. Republican senators, on the other hand, voted 82 percent in favor for women’s suffrage and 91 percent of House Republicans did. The war on women was led by the Democratic Party until they lost the final battle in 1920.

Getting back to the slavery-loving Democrats, Republican President Calvin Coolidge declared in his 1923 State of the Union, concerning African Americans, “Under our Constitution their rights are just as sacred as those of any other citizen. It is both a public and a private duty to protect those rights.” But this belief was not held by Democrat President Franklin D. Roosevelt who snubbed four-time gold medal winner Jesse Owens by not inviting him to the White House, only accepting white Olympians. In contrast, Republican President Dwight D. Eisenhower sent the 101st Airborne Division to escort black students into Little Rock Central High School after a Democrat governor refused to enforce a court order demanding the integration of schools. The Civil Rights Act of 1960 outlawed poll taxes and other measures aimed at keeping blacks and Hispanics from voting in the segregated South, but was filibustered by Democrats for 125 hours. The Civil Rights Act of 1964, a monumental piece of legislation, survived another multi-day filibuster by the Democrats but was overturned thanks to overwhelming Republican support.

But this is all in the past, right? Republicans haven’t done anything for blacks or women lately, have they? In fact, according to Google, up until recently, the California Republican Party’s first ideology was “Nazism.” While there has not been as much action on by Republicans in recent decades addressing African Americans or women, this is because we have made massive strides in American society since our undoubtedly checkered past.

The ultimate distinction between America’s two major parties is that Republicans treat blacks and women as they treat everyone else in society, as equals. Democrats never have and still don’t. They view minorities and women as an oppressed class, a group of victims that cannot succeed on their own. The Democrats have an indisputable history of racism and sexism and it continues to this day evidenced by the victim mentality hoisted upon blacks and women.

I know this is a tough pill for you to swallow my liberal friends, but history cannot be ignored. Facts do matter. Save me your emotional outrage, please. Thank you.

Those who claim history is irrelevant today are attempting to distract from the truth. The left obnoxiously signals their virtue, melts down over Trump latest tweet, and elevates identity politics over everything else because they are consciously or unconsciously trying to make up for their party’s mistakes of the past. Just as Germany is letting in massive amounts of immigrants to feel better after the Holocaust, Democrats today claim to be champions for women and the black community because their party fought so hard to keep both of these groups down throughout our nation’s history.

Don’t believe me? Let’s look at some more indisputable facts.

Since its founding in 1829, the Democratic Party has fought against every major civil rights bill and has a horrific history of discrimination. Here’s a substantial list for you. Since the mid-1800s, Democrats have:

  1. Defended slavery
  2. Started the Civil War
  3. Opposed Reconstruction in the South
  4. Founded the Ku Klux Klan
  5. Imposed segregation in the South
  6. Perpetrated lynchings of blacks
  7. Fought the Civil Rights Act in 1960 and 1964

Furthermore, the infamous Dred Scott decision on the Supreme Court in 1857 that classified slaves as property and not citizens, expanding the practice into the West, was due to seven Democrat judges voting in favor of continuing slavery versus two Republican judges voting against. Reconstruction in the South after the Civil War would have gone much smoother if John Wilkes Booth, a Democrat, hadn’t assassinated Abraham Lincoln. When Vice President Andrew Johnson, a Democrat, became president, he made very clear that the recently freed slaves would not be integrated into American society, as Lincoln planned to do.

After federal troops left the South after Reconstruction post-Civil War, Democrats returned to power and reestablished a white supremacist society with measures like black codes that restricted blacks’ ability to own property or run businesses, in addition to poll taxes and literacy tests which were used to keep blacks from voting. As previously mentioned, the KKK was started by a Democrat. Eric Foner. History professor at Columbia emphatically stated: “In effect, the Klan was a military force serving the interests of the Democratic Party.”

The Democrats’ discrimination and segregation continued into the 20th century. Democrat President Woodrow Wilson resegregated federal agencies and also showed the blatantly racist film, The Birth of a Nation (originally called The Clansman) at the White House. Perhaps most telling of all was Lyndon Johnson’s candidness when his party finally accepted that they could no longer keep African Americans down, so if they’re going to vote, they need to vote for us, he concluded. And he knew exactly how to do it: The Great Society. LBJ was quoted as saying, “I’ll have them n***ers voting Democrat for the next 200 years,” according to Washington Post investigative journalist Ronald Kessler’s book, Inside the White House.

And with the implementation of the Great Society in the 1960s and the continuation of the welfare state, Democrats, the party of “gimme, gimme, gimme,” has kept a sizable majority of African Americans dependent on the government. This has had devastating results for a people that were already enslaved and subsequently discriminated against.

As I wrote in April about Kanye West and Candace Owens and the redpilling of Black America earlier this year, people are finally starting to wake up to the Democrats’ debilitating policies as it relates to both black people and women in general.

Concerning blacks, Owens, Communications Director at Turning Point USA, declared they need to move away from the Democratic Party and a perpetual victim mentality and turn elsewhere and embrace a victor mentality. About five weeks ago, she tweeted: “All I said was that I wanted black people to embrace a victor mentality and now the Left is out to assassinate my character. THE LEFT NEEDS PEOPLE TO NEED THEM. Unfortunately, I do not want or need them.” The Democrats are taking the minority vote for granted and have destructively created a dependent class of African Americans who have not seen their lives improve over the last four decades despite voting exclusively Democrat. However, last month, with the help of Trump’s economic policies, black unemployment fell to an all time low.

In the 12 presidential elections since 1972, the Republican candidate won only about 10 percent of the black vote while the Democrat averaged 87 percent. And Donald Trump received less support from black Americans by any Republican candidate for president in 40 years outside of Romney and McCain who both ran against Obama. But an Associated Press/NORC Center poll conducted in February revealed a wider diversity of opinion and open party affiliation. Only 1 percent of black respondents described themselves as Republicans, yet just 59 percent of respondents identified themselves as Democrats, 16 percent were independent, and 21 percent identified with no label at all. With the rise of free thinking and the awakening of black America to the divisiveness and contempt for minority Americans, the Republican Party could very well see significant upticks in the black vote in the foreseeable future, even with Mr. Trump at the top of the ticket.

On a Sunday Fox & Friends interview in April, Candace Owens summed up the Democrats’ strategy to keep black people in their excessively dependent and victimized state by trapping them in a never ending outrage over the past:

“The truth is that the Left wants to strap black people to this idea that they are victims … they do not want black people focused on their futures they want black people focused on their past, they like black people to be government dependent, they don’t like to see black people that are free thinkers and are independent, and I think that’s what Kanye West and myself represents … and that makes them very nervous.”

Republicans are not anti-women because the oppose abortion. Republicans are not racist because they don’t treat blacks as victims. Republicans are not racist because they regularly support police officers. They are not the party of hate. They are the party of equality. They treat all Americans the same because we are all created equal, endowed with the God-given rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. They do not judge someone on the color of their skin, adhering to the divisive dogma of identity politics, but on the content of one’s character.

You can’t deny history and the truth is staring us all in the face. Republicans are far from respectable, but they are not sexist or racist. The Democrats are waging the war on women. The Democrats are the racist ones. The Democrats are to blame for the vast divisions in our society today. Not Trump. Not Republicans. Not Russia. Not Putin. This is reality. Deal with it and respond to me with your objections.
