If your period starts unexpectedly while traveling, ask the hotel front desk for pads or tampons before running out to buy them. Many hotels keep them available, sometimes for free. It isn’t universal, so just ask.
On a plane, check the lavatory first. Some airlines keep period products in a small compartment near the disposal bags or under the mirror. If you can’t find them, ask the flight attendant. Some airlines have them, some don’t.
A few other things worth knowing:
• Airport bathrooms may have free period products. Some airports and lounges now stock them, so check before buying an overpriced emergency pack.
• Pack a small emergency kit in your carry-on, not your checked bag. A few pads/tampons, spare underwear and a small plastic bag can save you a miserable trip.
• Bring more than you think you’ll need on a long flight. Plane bathrooms are tiny, and getting supplies mid-flight isn’t guaranteed.
• Don’t assume every hotel or airline provides them. It’s a common amenity, not a universal requirement. Have a backup.
• And if you’re traveling with someone who gets periods, throw a couple into the emergency bag anyway. They’re tiny, cheap and can save someone from a very embarrassing situation.
The bigger lesson:
When you’re traveling and suddenly need something, ask the people working there before assuming you have to buy it.
