AI Is Fake and Gay

by Chris Black

The AI acronym stands for artificial intelligence, and if you ask me, there’s no substitute for human intelligence. Or human stupidity, but that’s another issue.

Not only is it a misnomer to call AI-generated content “art,” it’s also a misnomer to even call the technology “artificial intelligence” in the first place.

“Intelligence” implies critical thought and comprehension… Machine learning isn’t that.

The machine doesn’t ponder or “think” as we do.

No matter how much better it gets, it will never really comprehend information in the way a human being can.

It will just produce increasingly complex results from the inputs you give it. Maybe there will be some threshold that gets crossed where we will no longer be able to tell the difference, but that’s not the point.

It will never possess the authenticity or spontaneity of human thought.

Everything that the machine “knows” is just derived from past data.

And this is also to say nothing of the fact that motivated ideologues are actively trying to sabotage whatever open-endedness you could allow machines to have in the first place.

And no, I am not keen on submitting myself to the Big Data machine learning Totalitarian Soy State panopticon just because it upsets some mediocre human artists. There have always been bad human artists, but that’s how we know who the talented artists are. They stand out amongst the mediocrity.

Machine-generated “art” feels neither good nor bad, always exuding this strange ex nihilo vibe, despite being based on massive data sets of source material. It contains everything and nothing at the same time.

The historical trend of many mediocre artists being outshined by a minority of talented ones is preferable to universalized nothingness.
