Ash plume reaches 48,000 feet

The eruption rapidly escalated from an ash plume around 7,000 feet at 23:00 local time to roughly 45,000 feet ten minutes later, followed by an advisory placing ash near 48,000 feet.

Aviation becomes the immediate concern

The ash is moving west at roughly 50 knots, meaning the plume can spread rapidly away from the volcano. A plume reaching 48,000 feet is particularly important because it can interfere with aircraft operating at cruising altitude.
