From Daily Mail: Bette Midler’s lavish Fifth Avenue penthouse apartment has gone on sale for an astonishing $50 million after the much-loved singer and entertainer revealed she wanted to downsize now that her daughter has flown the nest.
The Wind Beneath My Wings songstress, 73, who is married to performance artist Martin von Haselberg, has lived in the Upper East Side triplex which boasts stunning views of the Central Park reservoir, since 1996.
With a more than generous 7,000 square feet of space and an additional 3,000 square feet of outdoor space, the property is among the best of its kind anywhere in New York City.
Midler’s daughter, Sophie von Haselberg, was schooled nearby but now in her thirties and pursuing a career in acting in LA, the singer explained it was time to let another family enjoy the property.
The asking price is $50 million, according to the listing broker, John Burger of Brown Harris Stevens, with $25,515 in monthly maintenance.
‘It’s time for another family to enjoy it,’ Ms. Midler told The New York Times, adding that she and Mr. von Haselberg ‘consider ourselves die-hard New Yorkers’ and plan to downsize into another Manhattan home.
After the units were initially bought, the interior was completely overhauled with an expansion by architect Frederick Fisher and Partners, the Brown Harris Stevens sales listing shows.
‘The ceilings were lower,’ Midler said of the property before it’s upgrade. ‘The corridors narrower, and many of the rooms were much smaller’. Today, she said, ‘it’s like a country house in the city.’
The triplex offers four bedrooms and six and a half baths, plus a home gym sizeable enough to be converted into a fifth bedroom. The penthouse has around 3,000 square feet of outdoor space that provide direct views of the Central Park reservoir.
