Ballot scanners fail across an entire New York county on Election Day, forcing officials to collect votes in orange security bags

Every ballot scanner across Westchester County, New York, reportedly stopped accepting ballots after polls opened at 6 a.m. today. Voters were still allowed to fill out paper ballots, but poll workers had to place them in sealed orange emergency bags for counting later. The county Board of Elections initially blamed ballot thickness, then removed that explanation from its updated statement without identifying the cause. Republican Congressman Mike Lawler said every scanner in the county was down, while Democratic challenger Cait Conley also urged voters to stay in line and cast their ballots. New York Attorney General Letitia James said her office was monitoring the problem. The disruption comes in a closely watched election, with Westchester County part of the battleground 17th Congressional District. Officials say the ballots will remain secured and be counted, but the scanner failures have left voters waiting for answers about what went wrong.
