Barclays PLC announced plans today to eliminate approximately 5,000 positions across its global operations as part of a sweeping corporate efficiency program. Executive leadership confirmed the structural workforce reduction is designed to lower operating expenses and reallocate corporate capital toward automated artificial intelligence platforms and digital banking infrastructure.
The multi thousand job cut marks one of the largest technology driven labor restructurings across international banking. In November 2023, Barclays initiated preliminary cost cutting measures by trimming 900 back office roles across its United Kingdom divisions, laying the groundwork for broader operational automation across its retail and investment banking units.
