Gendarmerie armored personnel carriers and elite tactical units moved into position outside the Élysée Palace and key central Paris monuments today as the French government enacted high level security measures following severe civil unrest. French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez ordered the nationwide deployment of 70,000 security personnel, water cannons, and armored vehicles, establishing security perimeters around President Emmanuel Macron’s official residence and banning unauthorized public gatherings.

The military scale police mobilization comes in direct response to the violent riots that paralyzed French urban centers a week prior. On October 17, nationwide cost of living and student demonstrations escalated into severe civil disorder, resulting in over 1,800 arrests, hundreds of injured officers, and extensive store looting across commercial districts in Paris, Marseille, and Lyon.
