Canada’s population grew from 35.7 million in 2015 to roughly 41.8 million in July 2026, an increase of about 17%, not 37%. Nearly 80% of the 1.8 million increase between 2016 and 2021 came from immigration, including temporary residents. The surge accelerated after 2021, with temporary residents reaching nearly 3 million by October 2024. Now the government is cutting arrivals. By July 2026, temporary residents had fallen by 154,614 over 12 months, while annual permanent immigration dropped below 400,000 for the first time since 2021–22. Canada is now trying to bring temporary residents below 5% of its population by the end of 2027.
