China prepares a 100 billion yuan stock-market rescue, regulators now urge companies to buy their own shares

China’s central bank is preparing to inject more than 100 billion yuan, roughly $15 billion, into the stock market through a liquidity program for brokers, insurers and fund companies. Thirty-one financial firms have already applied. Beijing also cut the rate on its share-buyback lending program from 1.25% to 1% and made the facility permanent. The intervention follows an 8.5% October drop in the CSI 300, its worst month since early 2016. On October 19, China’s securities regulator had already promised to prioritize market stability, with the technology-focused STAR 50 nearly 40% below its June peak. The property collapse remains in the background: nationwide property investment fell 19.2% in the first 7 months of 2026, while land-sale revenue dropped 30.8%. Beijing is now using central-bank liquidity and pressure on listed companies to support share prices while the property crisis and weak consumption continue weighing on confidence.
