Cost of Living: ‘I was forced to share a bed with my ex for months because she couldn’t afford to move out’

Aman from Peckham has shared a warning to others after he was forced to share a bed with his ex for months when she couldn’t afford to move out. Ben Mallins, 28, was stuck living with his ex for six weeks in his two-bedroom flat in Peckham after they broke up.

Ben and his brother purchased a two-bedroom flat in Peckham in 2019, and in March 2020, Ben’s girlfriend of two years moved in. However, the intense nature of being in a flat together during lockdown meant that cracks appeared in the relationship, and by August they decided to go their separate ways.

Only his ex-partner did not go her own way as soon as they had hoped – as she struggled to find an affordable one-bedroom house, a struggle which Ben warns will become even more likely amid the cost-of-living crisis and notoriously difficult housing market in the capital. While Ben’s ex-partner didn’t own a share of the flat, she had been contributing through rent payments and decided she wanted to stay in the flat, leading to a very awkward atmosphere.
