Denmark preparing for all sorts of war

For the first time in recent history, Danish conscripts have been deployed to Greenland for a military exercise.

While in Greenland, they will train and practice military skills in unfamiliar Arctic terrain, take part in operational duties during Exercise Arctic Endurance, and work alongside their Greenlandic colleagues undergoing Arctic Basic Training.

The conscripts are from the Schleswig Regiment of Foot (Slesvigske Fodregiment). They began Denmark’s new extended 11-month military service in Haderslev in February.

  • The first group of soldiers under Denmark’s new 11-month conscription scheme arrived in Nuuk in early August.
  • They are split between Nuuk and Kangerlussuaq and are carrying out operational duties, not just training.
  • Tasks include working in open, treeless Arctic terrain that is very different from the forests Danish units usually use.
  • They train alongside Greenlandic personnel in Arctic Basic Training.
  • The deployment is part of a wider Danish plan to keep an increased military presence of troops, ships and aircraft in and around Greenland throughout 2026, coordinated with the Greenlandic government and NATO allies.

Danish Defence has kept Exercise Arctic Endurance running all year with multiple NATO partners including France, Germany, Sweden and Norway.
Allied planning and reconnaissance teams have been rotating through Greenland in recent weeks.
Denmark continues to expand its overall Arctic footprint with ships, aircraft and critical-infrastructure protection training.
