Acting Deputy Attorney General Trent McCotter sent letters Tuesday to California Secretary of State Shirley Weber and Los Angeles County Registrar Dean Logan. The letters enclosed a password-protected thumb drive listing more than 20,000 names the federal government believes are likely noncitizens who were sent mail ballots. Officials were given 48 hours to segregate any returned ballots and withhold unsent ones until citizenship is confirmed. California did not comply. On Thursday the Justice Department sued in the Central District of California. It asks a judge to bar the state from tabulating vote-by-mail ballots from people on the list until citizenship is verified. California began mailing ballots October 5. Election Day is November 3.
