The U.S. Treasury sold a record $839 billion in Treasury bills and notes across 11 auctions from October 26 through October 29, beating the previous weekly record of $834 billion set a year earlier. But there’s a distinction worth making: roughly $733 billion was used to refinance maturing debt, leaving about $106 billion in new borrowing. The record gross figure shows how much debt Washington must continually roll over, not how much new money it borrowed in one week.
