The iconic Marché des Enfants-Rouges in Paris was ravaged by fire overnight. Adored by locals and tourists alike, it was believed to be the oldest food market in Paris. There were no casualties, but the market’s vendors have lost everything, and the history is irreplaceable. Details by Charli James.
A fire has destroyed a centuries-old covered food market in Paris.
The Marché des Enfants Rouges, a food market in the Marais neighborhood of the French city that opened in 1615, was destroyed in a fire on Monday, Oct. 12, per The New York Times.
The Paris Fire Brigade said that units arrived around 4:15 a.m. to address the “violent fire,” adding that it “completely engulfed” the market “despite the rapid intervention of emergency services.”
The blaze required nine hoses to be contained, the post said.
Per The New York Times, fire official Lt. Col. Pierre de Bouvier said the fire had consumed around 10,000 square feet of the market when the department arrived.
He said, “Nothing remains,” as the market’s stalls and part of its metal structure were destroyed, the outlet reported.
