On September 2, Samsung published a security advisory confirming it had been hacked. The breach would appear to have been of Samsung systems in the U.S. and took place in ‘late July’ according to the advisory.
Although it is not clear exactly when Samsung discovered the breach, we do know that “on or around August 4,” Samsung determined that some personal data of some customers was compromised. Again, Samsung has given no indication at this time as to how many of its customers in the U.S. have been affected.
Samsung says that no credit or debit card information was accessed, nor social security numbers, however, the extent of the data that was compromised is alarming. Samsung has stated that the precise nature of the data that has been accessed may vary from customer to customer.
