President Emmanuel Macron spoke to the nation Sunday night from the Élysée Palace. He called for calm and order after Saturday’s demonstrations against fuel prices and the cost of living turned into clashes and looting in multiple cities. Interior Ministry figures put arrests at about 2,400. Roughly 1,000 police and gendarmes were injured, seven seriously. The historic town hall in Limoges burned. Protesters entered Marseille’s town hall. Macron distinguished between what he called legitimate protester demands and those who destroyed property or looted. He said the latter would face justice. Government estimates put Saturday’s turnout at 550,000; organizers said higher. Some unrest continued in Paris on Sunday.
