New Mexico officials evacuate communities over imminent McLeod Dam failure

Doña Ana County ordered residents of Salem and Garfield to evacuate Tuesday afternoon after McLeod Dam, also known locally as Garfield Dam, showed signs of being overwhelmed by runoff.
The National Weather Service issued a flash-flood emergency and described the dam failure risk as imminent. Residents were told not to wait for conditions to worsen.
The immediate threat is not just the dam itself. Floodwaters had already breached levees around a water-treatment facility near Rincon, while several other dams in the area were approaching capacity.
