A petition demanding that House Democrats reject Hakeem Jeffries for Speaker has passed 666,000 signatures, exposing growing frustration with the party’s leadership after its midterm victory. Launched by Democratic activist Nicole Whitted in September, the petition calls for an open contest and accuses Jeffries of representing the Democratic establishment rather than ordinary voters. Critics have raised concerns about his leadership, corporate campaign donations and support for Israel. Actor Mark Ruffalo has also promoted the petition. Jeffries is still pursuing the Speakership, asking incoming Democrats for their support on November 4. The fight now puts the party’s progressive wing in direct conflict with its established leadership before the new Congress even convenes in January.
