The power and pervasiveness of cognitive dissonance combined with the willingness of most to submit to a perceived “authority” they think is mildly sympathetic to their plight and needs cannot be understated. Stanley Milgram discovered that some who see others as “authority figures” will do anything for that “authority” up to and including murdering someone simply because the “authority” said so. The mind is a powerful and is quite easy to control. And the powers-that-shouldn’t-be know this very very well.
