New Mental Health Hospital built in the U.K.

Work on the facility for adults and older people with mental health conditions started a year ago, with a ground breaking ceremony taking place on January 30, 2024.

The hospital, on Mount View Street, Bexhill, was officially named Combe Valley – a name chosen by staff and service users.

Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust’s new adult inpatient facility, North View, became fully operational. The £105.9 million purpose-built hospital replaces Park House on the North Manchester General Hospital site. It has 150 single en-suite bedrooms across nine single-sex wards, including a psychiatric intensive care unit, six adult acute wards, one rehabilitation ward, one older adults’ ward, and a treatment suite. It is the first mental health facility in the country to run entirely on electricity, with solar panels and intelligent building systems. Patients and staff transferred from the old site, which is set for demolition.

This follows a wider government plan announced in August for £343 million to open 159 new NHS mental health facilities across England, 100 community centres and 59 dedicated mental health emergency departments, described as the biggest redesign of services in a generation. The first are expected to open from autumn 2026.
