The most powerful Democrat on Capitol Hill said Friday that President Trump should call off his summit next week with Russian leader Vladimir Putin after prosecutors indicted Russian military operatives for hacking the 2016 election.
Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer, New York Democrat, said the indictments prove Mr. Putin’s government interfered with the election — and said Mr. Trump needs to take steps to make clear he understands the gravity of that.

Special counsel Robert Mueller on Friday indicted 12 Russian military officials, accusing them of massive attempts to interfere in the 2016 presidential election by emails from Hillary Clinton’s campaign chief and another political committee, and penetrating state elections computers.
Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein announced the indictments at the Justice Department, just days before President Trump is to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin for a one-on-one summit.

Mueller Indicts 12 Russian Intel Officials For Hacking DNC, Hillary Campaign
The Russians are accused of hacking into the computer networks of the Democratic National Committee, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and the presidential campaign of Hillary Clinton, and then releasing stolen emails on the internet in the months before the election. Of course, that probably means that someone at the DOJ finally has access to the DNC Server – i.e., Exhibit A – which oddly enough, nobody from either the CIA or FBI had asked to see at the time of the alleged hack.
“The object of the conspiracy was to hack into the computers of U.S. persons and entities involved in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, steal documents from those computers, and stage releases of the stolen documents to interfere with the 2016 U.S. presidential election,” the indictment reads.
That said, the DOJ admits that no Americans were involved in these efforts, and the hacking operation did not alter the outcome of the election.

That was the message from Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) Friday regarding President Trump’s one-on-one meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin planned for Monday in Helsinki.
Schumer called for the cancellation of the ultra-private face-to-face following the indictments Friday of 12 senior Russian military officers on charges they hacked Democrats to swing the 2016 presidential election.
“Trump should cancel his meeting with Vladimir Putin until Russia takes demonstrable and transparent steps to prove that they won’t interfere in future elections,” Schumer said in his statement.
“Glad-handing with Vladimir Putin on the heels of these indictments would be an insult to our democracy.”
