The Times wrote on October 29 that the current federal probe into Omar looks in part at her 2009 marriage to British citizen Ahmed Nur Said Elmi. Officials told the paper the FBI and Homeland Security investigated the marriage in the summer of 2016 under Obama and found some evidence it was fraudulent. Prosecutors dropped it because the possible felony sat outside the five year limit. Omar married Elmi on February 12, 2009 and divorced him in 2017. She has called the brother claim a conspiracy since 2016. Agents searched her Washington home on October 12. In an October 21 interview she said she was not related to Elmi “not to my knowledge.” A court filing last week listed her as Ilhan Nur Said Elmi. She has not been charged. The Times noted it is still unclear what specific evidence shows Elmi is her brother.
