Overnight curfews in parts of Paris (Place de la République and Les Halles, 11 p.m.–6 a.m.), Lyon, Lille, Nice and other cities produced a calm night after weekend looting and arson. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said the targeted curfews “contributed to the calm last night” and that new ones would be decided “where the situation warrants.” Interior Minister Laurent Nunez had earlier admitted police “lost control” in some cities and offered to resign; Macron refused. About 3,000 businesses were affected over the weekend. Protest organizers called for another round of demonstrations Saturday. Italy moved toward stronger powers against rioters and planned to deploy 500 troops in Milan.
