Earlier in the fall the total had been lowered to 14, with officials saying some deaths occurred after a declared ceasefire and did not count. Hegseth had called a Washington Post report of higher deaths “disgusting and fake.” House members had demanded an explanation after discovering a discrepancy. The revised numbers appeared on the same day Trump was announcing the Russian diesel deal and two days before the Riyadh airport strikes.
