Mossos d’Esquadra and local police arrested about 100 people Saturday evening around Plaza de Catalunya after roughly 600 hooded youths, many dressed in black, looted 14 shops and set more than 30 fires to street furniture, bins, and vehicles. Catalonia Interior Minister Núria Parlon said about 25 percent of those detained were minors. The gathering was called on social media under the slogan “Institut Indignats,” a translation of the French “Lycéens Indignés” movement that has driven student protests and violence in France in recent weeks. Barcelona Mayor Jaume Collboni said the vandalism would not go unpunished, including consequences for parents of minors. Authorities described the groups as unorganized and said the violence was not tied to a separate long running housing protest encampment in the same square. Shoppers were trapped inside stores including El Corte Inglés as shutters were lowered.
