Cash exiting the banking system entirely—shows a wider retreat: about $9.4 billion was converted into physical currency in the second quarter alone, according to The Washington Post, with July recording the largest monthly outflow yet, and the flight continuing into August.

By the end of May, the stock of currency outside the banking system had swollen by roughly $13.6 billion since January—the fastest such buildup since the coronavirus pandemic and the largest May increase in records dating back to 1995.
