SAMA joined as an observer in 2023, became a participant in 2024, completed its proof of concept in May 2025 and later confirmed it was no longer a participating member. The change only became a major headline this month.
That timing suggests this was not necessarily a sudden break with China. Saudi Arabia may have tested the technology, learned how it worked and then stepped away from formal public participation while preserving other options.
What Saudi Arabia Actually Left
mBridge is a wholesale cross border settlement platform using central bank digital currencies.
Leaving mBridge does not mean Saudi Arabia stopped using RMB.
It does not mean Saudi banks stopped using CIPS.
It does not mean Saudi oil can no longer be invoiced or settled in Chinese currency.
Saudi Arabia left one platform.
That distinction matters.
Why Test mBridge At All
The Saudi riyal remains pegged to the dollar at 3.75.
But the currency peg and the payment rail are separate questions.
Saudi Arabia can keep the dollar peg while experimenting with faster RMB settlement for trade with China.
That fits Riyadh’s broader strategy.
Keep the American security relationship.
Keep dollar liquidity.
Keep the peg.
But understand every alternative payment architecture available.
That is optionality more than outright de dollarization.
Could Washington Have Influenced The Decision
There is no public evidence showing Washington ordered Riyadh to leave mBridge.
But the United States still holds enormous structural leverage through weapons, intelligence, military integration, dollar clearing and access to Western capital markets.
Washington would not necessarily need an explicit ultimatum for Saudi officials to understand the political cost of being publicly attached to infrastructure viewed as reducing dollar or sanctions leverage.
Quiet pressure is plausible.
It is not proven.
Why CIPS Still Matters
Saudi Arabia leaving mBridge does not stop CIPS growth because CIPS is a separate system.
China’s RMB payment infrastructure can continue expanding regardless of whether Saudi Arabia remains inside one CBDC experiment.
The more important question is whether RMB trade settlement, energy invoicing and RMB asset holdings continue growing beneath the headline.
If they do, leaving mBridge may represent much less of a monetary reversal than it appears.
Ripple Could Be The More Interesting Alternative
In January 2026, Jeel, the innovation arm of Riyad Bank, announced a partnership with Ripple focused on cross border payments, custody and tokenization.
That does not mean SAMA adopted Ripple or XRP.
But it does show a major Saudi banking institution testing private digital payment infrastructure while Saudi Arabia steps away from a China heavy sovereign CBDC platform.
That could be strategically useful.
RLUSD could preserve dollar based settlement.
XRPL could support tokenized assets and payments.
XRP could potentially bridge currencies if institutions actually choose to use it.
That last point is critical.
Ripple adoption does not automatically mean XRP adoption.
The real signal would be Saudi banks moving from experimentation into actual XRP liquidity corridors, RLUSD settlement or XRPL based cross border infrastructure.
My Take
Saudi Arabia may not be choosing between the dollar and China at all.
It may be choosing multiple rails while keeping the dollar at the center.
Learn mBridge.
Maintain CIPS access.
Keep the dollar peg.
Explore Ripple.
Watch Project Agorá and tokenized dollar systems.
Preserve as many settlement options as possible without becoming dependent on any single architecture.
The real question is not whether Saudi Arabia left mBridge.
It is which rails Riyadh actually scales next and what currency sits underneath them when real money starts moving through the system.
Saudi Arabia Leaving mBridge Does Not Mean It Left The RMB System
