Spain’s transport minister resigns after two deadly train crashes kill 115 people

Transport Minister Óscar Puente resigned Tuesday, six days after a high-speed train collision near Urda killed 69 people. Spain’s January train crash killed another 46 people on the same Madrid-Seville rail corridor. Investigators examining the October 28 disaster are looking at a communications and signaling failure that led controllers to authorize a train to proceed despite another train stopped ahead. Puente had initially ruled out resigning, but said a transport minister could not remain in office after two accidents of this severity in less than a year. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced Wednesday that Deputy Prime Minister Carlos Cuerpo would temporarily take over the transport ministry. Spain’s national election is scheduled for November 29.
