Staying off reddit for a while – Too much emotional manipulation

by pissonyorug

I’m making this post not only to put my opinion out there but as an accountability measure for myself – if you tell people you are doing something, you’re more likely to follow through.

Today, like many other days, I opened up reddit and I was looking at the front page (notably I was logged out and my personal feed is much more curated) and the things that I saw filled me with anger, disgust, and left me wanting justice. The majority of the posts were of police brutality, blacks ganging up on a white guy, just general atrocities of all parts of the spectrum. Part of me truly believes that this is purposeful, whoever controls this site has an agenda and much like many different propaganda tools in the media, reddit is purposefully manipulating our emotions through these posts.

I have known this for a long time, but I always come back to this website because there are really great parts of it, but I’ve come to realize that I don’t need to be here every single day filling my animalistic brain with these threats to my well being when they are not even present in my reality. Yes, it is important to know what is going on in the world, but there is a way to do that without sacrificing your own emotional well being. I fully believe in the notion that whoever controls your emotions controls you, and I’ll be damned if I’m not the one in control. So with that, I’ll be out of here for a while. This is one of my favorite subs just for pure discussion and bringing novel ideas to the table in a world that is so dismissive of anything against that status quo, so I’m sure there are many like minded individuals who may have similar issues with the website. Peace fellow conspirators
