A programming error in a third-party software update on the Texas Department of Public Safety online driver’s license portal, dating to October 2025, left more than 500,000 voter registration applications and updates unprocessed and unsent to counties. The problem surfaced publicly in late September, weeks before the 5 October registration deadline. Counties scrambled to process the records while also handling the normal late surge of applications. Voting rights groups sued last week, citing a 2021 settlement that required reliable online registration through DPS. By Wednesday the secretary of state’s office and county officials said the backlog appeared largely cleared, with little risk that affected voters would be unable to vote. Early voting starts Monday in a cycle that includes one of the year’s closest Senate races.
