The loss of the entire US electric grid is imminent, and nearly guaranteed.

There are roughly 2000 LPT or extra high voltage transformers present inside the US electric grids (East, West, and Texas) today. If an adversary was able to destroy as few as nine of these specialized transformers, the entire US electric grid would be disabled for roughly 18 months due to the lack of spares and ability to replace the failed units. It would not be difficult for an adversary to accomplish this task since each of these reside in roughly 55,000 possible locations. If the attackers knew the location of the LPT’s they could disable much more than nine of them in very short order using anti-material rifles or even small drones equipped with thermite devices that can be made from field expedient materials.

It would not be difficult for a state level actor such as Iran to do this, it would not take more than 100 agents with basic items they could source domestically assuming they had the locations of these 2000 LPT’s.

Iran, Russia, or a domestic “bad player” could do this tomorrow if they know which facilities to hit.
