Top Republican Could Soon Replace McCarthy As House Speaker

Republicans as a whole are thrilled to be taking the House Majority in 2023 and are eagerly awaiting the new term to address issues that have been pushed through by Democrats in the last two years. Within the party, however, there is no unity as to leadership. Current House Minority leader Kevin McCarthy has been criticized by more conservative Republicans for his compromises and for not taking a hard enough line against Democrat initiatives.

However, other Republicans feel that McCarthy is the man for the job, and has held his own during the last two years when Democrats had almost free reign.

In November, House Republicans nominated McCarthy to serve as Speaker when the new session begins in January, there are others in the House that oppose McCarthy. Arizona Rep. Andy Biggs, a conservative member of the House Freedom Caucus challenged McCarthy for the leadership spot. Since then, McCarthy has been working hard to get the needed 218 Republican votes in the House in January.

Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz is one congressman who has vowed not to vote for McCarthy. The Washington Post reported that Gaetz said, “To believe that Kevin’s going to be speaker, you have to believe he’s going to move votes in the next six weeks that he couldn’t move in the last six years.” The Post also noted that an ally of McCarthy’s, Rep Tom Cole of Oklahoma, spoke out for McCarthy saying he has proven he can handle the role. “The guy has added seats every time he’s been our leader,” Cole said. “He’s our best strategist, he’s our best fundraiser, he’s our best candidate recruiter. Isn’t that the guy you want to lead you? I think so.”

This month former President Donald Trump spoke of his support for McCarthy as a leader. In an interview with Breitbart News, Trump stated: “Look, I think this: Kevin has worked very hard. I think he deserves the shot. Hopefully, he’s going to be very strong and going to be very good and he’s going to do what everybody wants.”
