The Trump administration has discussed using ships to transport migrants to Central and South America, two U.S. officials told The New York Times.
It is unknown why the plan is being considered, though it would offload deportation costs from Homeland Security to the War Department, the Times reported.
“D.H.S. is assessing all our resources, to maximize efficiency and continue to deliver on President [Donald] Trump’s mission of securing the homeland for all Americans,” the Homeland Security Department said in a statement.
DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin “is 100 percent focused on ensuring that the needs of our department are met while being the best possible steward of taxpayer dollars.”
The War Department did not comment on the proposal.
The Trump administration has previously deported people using military planes and has also promoted policies that would allow immigrants to self-deport.
