President Trump said he directed the Justice Department to file a lawsuit seeking to block certification of Alaska’s U.S. Senate race if Republican incumbent Dan S. Sullivan loses. The suit, filed in Anchorage, alleges that a second candidate named Daniel J. Sullivan Jr. is on the ballot to confuse voters and siphon votes from the incumbent in the ranked choice contest against Democrat Mary Peltola. The DOJ asks a court to delay certification pending an investigation into whether votes for the second Sullivan were intended for the incumbent if the margin is close enough to change the outcome. Trump has called the second candidacy a scam. The race is one of several that could decide Senate control before the November 3 election.
