Trump says the U.S. is not negotiating with Iran after October’s ceasefire assurances

President Donald Trump said today that the United States is not negotiating with Iran and that “something” will happen “fairly soon.” On October 8, Trump had described discussions with Tehran as productive and said the United States would not attack Iran before the November 3 midterm elections. On October 21, Iran’s foreign minister said indirect ceasefire discussions were continuing through mediators, despite disagreements over the U.S. blockade and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Trump’s latest statement now conflicts with Tehran’s account of ongoing contacts, while reports of possible U.S.-Israeli strikes after the midterms add uncertainty to the outlook for Gulf oil supplies
