US House Reps fined for not going thru metal detector

Text:
Just in: House votes to penalize members of Congress who refuse to go through metal detectors outside the House chamber with $5,000 fine for a first offense and $10,000 thereafter — deducted from their pay.

This seems like a very American story.
The only place I’ve gone through a metal detector was at the airport. And if you try to bring a gun through there, they arrest you.
Why would anyone try to bring a gun to work?
