Seven states in the U.S. this past Tuesday held their primaries for the midterm elections. There were some major upsets, like in the case of Joe Crowley who, after serving in Congress for 20 years, lost the Democratic primary to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old former Bernie Sanders organizer. Crowley was slated to move up in the ranks of party leadership before this unexpected upset.
Despite, his long tenure in Congress, the longest serving U.S. representative Don Young (R-AL) has been working from the Capitol for 45 years, over twice as long as Crowley’s 20-year tenure.
Both parties are at major turning points in their political history, resulting from years of fissures in a highly politicized national environment.
