A 5% 10-year Treasury yield is something that keeps investors up at night.

Yields were edging up again on Friday after briefly dipping following the August inflation report. The 10-year bond yield was 4.95% around midday, just 5 basis points from the important 5% threshold that’s represented a danger zone for stocks. It briefly spiked to 4.99% earlier in the day.

The idea of retirement as a period of contented leisure has come and gone, said Lawrence Samuel, cultural historian and author of the new book “The Rise and Fall of Retirement in the United States: A Social History.” He believes the modern era of retirement is over, and even expects Social Security to eventually “go away” amid a new model in which people work longer into their old age.
